Did you know that bird toys are the only accessories in your bird's cage that work 24 seven? Remember the 60/40 rule. Birds in the wild spend 40% of their time seeking food and 60% of their time trying not to be food - which puts an enormous amount of responsibility on the
bird toy.

The Polite Parrot
Bird toys go far beyond the entertainment of birds. On the 40% side - seeking food part of the equation, we look at the action associated with bird toys called foraging. Birds in the wild start their day at the crack of dawn seeking food. Whether it be the South American rain forest or the Serengeti Plains in the Congo, parrots take flight at the crack of dawn flying to known places where food is available. (Macaws in the South American Rain Forest have been observed to have as many as 100 places they stop to seek food).
"Available" is a relative term. The food might be in the form of bugs living under the bark of old trees, fruits and berries in trees and shrubs and whatever they might find growing or crawling under rocks on the ground or on the sides of hills and mountains. The persistent search for food using their beaks and tounges to identify food is called foraging.
Who doesn't have a parrot that hasn't chewed a small piece of furniture, a window blind, a TV remote or a computer keyboard? Foraging - and on another level, keeping themselves entertained is another major reason why birds must have bird toys. The best way to keep birds from chewing on things you don't want them to is to offer viable alternatives in the form of bird toys. Wood, leather, rope, chain, plastic - they don't care, they need to be using their beak day in and day out to remain happy.
DIY Large Bird Toys - Video
The trying not to be eaten 60% of the equation thing. This issue was brought squarely into focus through a thread we were following on
Holistic Avian Care Group on Facebook
.
The thread started with a woman seeking solutions to reduce the plucking of her Goffin Cockatoo. She was thinking about searching out herbs and spices from the Tanimbar Bar Islands which is where Goffins are from. Although I admired her thinking, generally if a bird is on a well balanced nutritious diet which which it sounded like this woman's bird was on, shifting nutrients sources will probably not end up in reduction of plucking.
As the thread evolved we came to learn that the birds cage was in front of a large picture window and yes her Goffin cockatoo had probably seen some hawks through the window. Digressing here for a moment, person birds and parrots generally like to have at least one side of their birdcage fully blocked from view so it's best to put your bird cage against at least one wall. The bigger overriding issue is when your bird is in its cage, does it feel secure?
Making bird toys from cardboard tubes - Video
Here is where the flipside of bird toys come in. Think of bird toys as the leaves of a tree your bird may reside in in the wild. Parrots will always congregate in flocks in trees with lots of foliage. The beautiful colors that make these wonderful creatures so attractive to us are nature's way of helping him hide in their natural habitat from predators.
Let's bring this a little closer to home. When you go to sleep at night in your own bedroom, you close the blinds and the door so that you have
privacy.
Generally speaking, we humans don't like living in a fishbowl environment. Neither do our birds. Take a good look at your birdcage. If it's not covered and your bird is inside, do you think you are bird feels exposed? You've answered your own question.
Getting back to the Facebook thread, the Goffin's owner agreed that yes her bird might feel a tad exposed. This feeling of exposure may lead to nervous picking at the feathers which may escalate into regular plucking.
We're asked all the time how many toys should I put in my birdcage? Our answer will always be "so many toys that you can't see the bird". They can be toys or even strips of newspaper woven through the bars of the cage. You can stop aggression between small birds like finches by using areas of toys or shrubbery they can hide behind much like you or I might seek
temporary privacy
from a spouse or family member.
Sure we'll toot our own horn here and tell you that we've added
lots of yummy new bird toys to the website
. But we'll also tell you you don't have to spend a lot of money on toys. Use your imagination. We have a whole section of
DIY toys from household items
that will cost you pennies and yet achieve the same goal of allowing your bird to forage in making your bird feel safe in its own cage.
