Excerpt - A LONG TERM PROJECT I have spent weeks doing a spreadsheet of the ingredients of every manufactured diets (pellets and extrusions) for parrots that I know about. Then I spent many more days looking up what I could find about those ingredients on the Internet. This was a nightmare to research. I am not a chemist and freely admit that I wish that I knew more about the chemical components of these ingredients. Although I can figure out why many of the ingredients are put in parrot diets, I don’t understand the reason for others. There are several ingredients in almost all the manufactured parrot diets that I would not want to feed my parrots. One of them is Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex, which seems to be in every manufactured diet except for three; Totally Organics, Goldenfeast Golden-oble’s, and Harrison’s. It is banned for used in human foods. There are essentially two types of manufactured diets for parrots: rolled or cold pellets and extruded diets. However some diets don’t quite fit these categories, including Harrison’s and Caitec. Extruded diets: From Wikipedia: “In the extrusion process, raw materials are first ground to the correct particle size (usually the consistency of coarse flour). The dry mix is passed through a pre-conditioner, where other ingredients are added (liquid sugar, fats, dyes, supplementation, chemicals, and water depending on the product being made), steam is also injected to start the cooking process. The preconditioned mix is then passed through an extruder, and then forced through a die where it is cut ........................................ Please purchase this E-book to read more.
