There is more and more evidence that too many companion parrots lead their lives in hormonal overload and, therefore, continuing physical and sexual agitation. Why is this a problem? In a program that Dr. Tammy Jenkins gave at the Parrot Island Seminar in June 2004, she discussed this very important topic at length. Most of her talk was about the detrimental effects of remaining stuck in hormonal overload on the health of the companion parrot. This hormonal overload can create serious health problems. One of her concerns was that so many people think in black and white and would, therefore, make drastic changes in their parrots’ lives based on her information. I certainly share this concern. The key, as always, is finding a balance and paying close attention to our individual parrots’ moods and body language. Try to understand what normal seasonal breeding behavior in your parrot is and if he or she seems stuck in hormonal overload, cut back a bit on some of the enrichments and cuddling for awhile. I am allergic to bee stings and have had to give myself an epinephrine injection on several occasions. The injection does more than just give my body an adrenaline rush and I hate the way it makes my body feel. It puts me into a state of hyper agitation.
