These Indian parrots are opium addicts

Read in 2 minutes

Jaipur: Poppy farmers in Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh district are facing a unique problem.

Come March, parrots descend on their fields in large numbers to slurp on the milk oozing out of cuts made in the pods to ripen the yield.

“Once they have their fill they sit on trees and sleep there for hours. Some of them can be seen circling or staggering before falling from the trees due to overdose of opium,” says Kishore Kumar Dhaker, a poppy farmer in Sukwara village of Chittorgarh.

Beth – do you know their sex?

Do power lines affect the health of birds, when they perch on them?

Read in 7 minutes

Questions about birds I answered on Quora the week of 3/13/17

Do power lines affect the health of birds, when they perch on them?

I can’t speak to power lines but I know that Quaker parrots are colonial animals. They build large nests where a whole colony can live enabling them to survive brutal Chicago winters.

A heat source they seek out and build their nests in is electrical transformers. CommEd has access to a number of Quaker rescues who will come and get the birds when requested.

Those Lovable Lovebirds – 9 Lovebird Videos

Read in 3 minutes

Lovebirds are native to the African continent while the Gray-headed lovebird also known as the Madagascar lovebird comes from of all places, Madagascar. Lovebirds are known for their strong monogamous relationships and spend a lot of time being together wing to wing.

They are capable of having close relationships with people in addition to their chosen companion. They like to snuggle with people and quite often they will train their humans. You’re really better off spending short periods throughout the day with your lovebird rather than just one or two longer interactions, the way you would with a larger parrot. Lovebirds can be noisy but are not necessarily good talkers.

How can you compare the personalities of an African grey and a macaw?

Read in 9 minutes

That is not really a fair question. The personality of a captive bird is determined by many factors and the environment that humans provide for them.

The bigger question is are we seeing the paratroop personality or does being a captain of bird change everything? In other words would a bird be different in the wild than in captivity?

There is no single event, procedure or training apparatus that will cause a bird to act like this or that, be an uncontrollable screamer, feather self mutilator or toe tapper (a neurological issue in some eclectus parrots)

Most people fail in raising captive birds because they don’t “speak bird”. It is essential to look at a pet bird holistically because every component of their life impacts their behavior.

Birds can be difficult when trying new foods

Read in 7 minutes

Dear Nora

Birds can be difficult when trying new foods, I am asking the company for their suggestions on conversion.

I will get back to you.

Hi Nora,

One of the problems we see is that birds get bored in general when simply eating out of a bowl full of food.

Hagen alternative formula parrot pellets might not be as pretty as fruit and flower shapes. Bright colored puffs also may contain more sugar than other bird food manufacturers use for greater palatability.

You can easily start by sprinkling Hagen alternative formula parrot pellets over her current food.

5 Ways to reduce hormonal bird behavior before you see the avian vet

Read in 9 minutes

Hypothetical – a 21st century genie sits down next you on a park bench. He looks pretty normal and explains that the whole genie thing has evolved along with modern society.

The dapper young lad named Gene (really?) goes on to say;

“The new rules are that you still get three wishes but “me” the genie decides what they are? It’ll be fun.

Wish number one is from this point forward you will have the ability to fly.

It gets better.

Peggie W replied – Feb 19, 8:25am

Hi, I am about to order some of the Scenic pellets for parakeets. I was just wondering how this compares to Volkman’s parakeet mix or Harrisons. I’ve been feeding my keets Volkman’s . Also, could you write more about parakeets ?

No one will write about parakeets! It’s always about the larger birds. I’d like to hear more about training an older, or stubborn bird, getting them to play more. Also, more about creative cage arrangement for smaller birds.
