I need a new Manzanita perch, -
got any without cracks?
Not really -
The reason being is
availability and demand. Manzanita is a natural growing bush that is being
over cut and also cut too green. Years ago, manzanita was only collected
after it was dried but now it is being cut green.
This rapid cutting and
drilling and insertion of hardware into the green wood does contribute to
more cracking than would be found in long cured wood.
Due to the high demand of this
product we are seeing more and more cracked manzanita perches and have no
way of stopping this aside from purchasing 3-6 months in advance, allowing
it to cure for a few months before the products are drilled and fitted
with hardware. This is not practical for us or most businesses.
We examine every perch ordered
and if the hardware at the ends are affected adversely (are loose) by the
cracks we do not send it out. Otherwise, the cracks do not cause any
problems for your birds, they actually do give the bird better footing on
what is normally a very slippery perch surface anyway.
Most perches can be turned to
aim the cracks downward to collect less debris and they will serve your
bird well for many years.
