Can Birds Safely Eat Dirt And Other Pet Bird Care Answers

Read in 8 minutes

Actually, my dogs are given mostly a raw diet and I supplement a little kibble.

I have to put her away until they’re done or she chases them from their own food :).

Thoughts, please.

Dear Pam

The dirt in your houseplants is more dangerous than the kibble.

How To Introduce New Toys That Parrots Should Play With

And How to Discourage Items They Should Leave Alone

I had a screen saver a while back with an umbrella cockatoo and the words (from the cockatoo’s perspective), “What’s mine is mine, what’s yours is mine, if you put it down it is mine, if I see it it is mine, but if you give it to me, I don’t want it”.

This is so true for many parrots and can be used to introduce new toys and cage additions to your bird’s environment.

Read in 7 minutes

Hi Mitch,

Thank you so much for getting back to me, what you had to say was very helpful.

I do not know how to send pictures from my Chrome book, only know how to send pictures with my phone, I’m not very good with technology.

I did get Alex a rope perch recently, but he won’t go near it as of yet.

I read on the parrot forum that Vitamin E oil is good for pressure sores.

Do you agree?

4 Large And Mini Macaw Problems Solved

Read in 12 minutes

Janie D.

I have an almost 16-year-old Red Fronted Macaw.

(2 – Red Fronted Macaws pictured above)

I got her as a 6-month-old chick and taught her bite words “hurt” and “cry”.

She uses them accurately!

She will pinch my arm if I reach carelessly into her cage and she will say HURT!

When she preens my hair and gets rough.

I will say are you tickling me?

Then she laughs, and stops being rough and also when I tickle her!

Birds can learn emotions if taught what they mean.

If she slips off her perch she says that hurts! Cry!

My husband had a Blue and Gold Macaw a few years ago. (she passed on)

However, she chose him!

Laurie C asks

My husband and I rescued a 3-month-old medium Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo (aka Eleonora cockatoo) from a horrible pet store situation last August.

We finished his hand-feeding which took another month.

He was very skinny and underfed so we have spoiled him rotten.

Both are female.

My Gray has begun acting strange.

How Do I Pet My African Grey Parrot Without Getting Bit

Read in 5 minutes

It’s a bird, not a dog and doesn’t necessarily want to get pet.

Birds want to be preened.

Re: “Larry’s was more direct”.

He let himself get bitten.

He made a fist to lessen the amount of skin the bird could get in his mouth and just let him bite.

How Important Is Artificial Lighting For Pet Birds

Read in 9 minutes

Our first answer coming from a question on Quora

Do parrots we rear at home need sunlight?

Firstly, lets set the record straight.

No amount of natural sunlight nor artificial light will help with the production of any vitamin in a bird’s body.

This is because of the dual integumentary systems of feathers and skin.

In order to enhance vitamin production, an animal needs to receive sunlight through its skin.

A birds skin is covered with feathers.
