Can I give raw almonds to my African grey parrot? Is it safe, or a risk to his health?

Read in 8 minutes

Firstly I need to address the “peanuts are bad for parrots” urban legend.

Reference one of the original answers to this question on Quora

If you leave a pizza on the kitchen counter for two days it will get fungus.

Cheese in the best of circumstances will grow fungus in the refrigerator after about a week.

What is a good summary about how it is to own parrots (macaws specifically)?

Read in 11 minutes

I don’t know that there’s enough storage space on the Quora servers to answer this.

I read that parrots are loud, noisy and messy – a lot.

Then again so are children.

Let’s start with a top level explanation.

Pet people in the disciple category will always react negatively towards the word own preferring instead to call it pet bird companionship.

In reality birds are the most owned pets we can have.

We have to lock them up in a bird jail.

Do my budgies and cockatiels feel bored or depressed with their life of captivity?

Read in 7 minutes

Captivity is a relative term. I’m not relegated to my home but I still have to pay rent, go to work, pay taxes and perform all those duties that enable me to be a good neighbor and good citizen of the world.

If captivity is all that you know, is it really captivity? We have four budgies, all rescues. We don’t have the background on any of them but we’ve kept them flighted thus they don’t ever leave the cage.

Humans have lots of bird advice – don’t get one, they’re hard to raise – which sounds like a martyr to me.

Read in 9 minutes

The following content is from 3 inquiries we received that we thought would be helpful by sharing.

We have four zebra finches in an outdoor aviary, with three walls being the exterior of our house, and the fourth wall is wire mesh.

We are in San Diego, and our nights can drop down to 40-50 degree. We are planning to add plexiglass panels over the mesh at night, and we are trying to decide on a heat source.

Clear And Unbiased Facts About What Are The Best Seed, Blend And Pellet Diets For Captive Birds? (Without All The Hype)

Read in 9 minutes

There is no perfect seed, blend or pellet diet for any exotic bird species. Our Senegal parrot Peaches eats whatever broken bags or tubs we get with our deliveries.

She probably has five or six brands in her food storage container currently. I even toss in large parrot food and simply crack the big nuts open for her.

Not all pellets on the same. The concept behind pellets is they are an engineered food  containing 100% of all the nutrition that a bird needs.  At the Hagen Avicultural Research Institute  they have third generation quaker parrots who have been eating Hagen Tropican exclusively for 25 years.
