Help For A Green Cheek Conures Projectile Vomiting

Read in 9 minutes

Mona S. writes

I recently had the experience of seeing my beloved Green Cheek Conure do what I would describe as projectile vomiting, which absolutely scared me to nearly to death.

I have owned birds for about 30 years or so and had never seen anything like this.

Actually, I was not even aware that birds could vomit at all, except for regurgitating to feed their young.

This looked like someone had turned on the faucet for a couple of seconds.

Fortunately, he has been perfectly fine ever since.

Do you have any idea as to what could cause something like this to happen?

Thanks for your time (and for your very information Sunday Brunch emails).

Best regards,

Elaine and Mango the Jenday Conure

Dear Mitch & Catherine

I just recently got a Jenday Conure in late October and I named him Mango.

He has his royal blue feathers on his wings and tail but is not too socialized with people.

The breeder advised that he came to her, but the circumstances were unclear.

I have a 1.5 year old Green Cheek Conure.

We had bonded rather well until recently.

I have health issues and had gone several weeks without giving her much attention.

I didn’t think it would be a problem.

She didn’t act any differently.

What are the absolute worst types of parrots for a first-time bird owner?

Read in 4 minutes

Once again, although well-intentioned, people are breaking down your choices into the macro of species (Quora question).

One answer started with

  1. Cockatoos
  2. Macaws
  3. Amazons

Yet these three species come in close to a combined 100 flavors.

Major Mitchell cockatoos are not loud, and not necessarily cuddly

Bare eyed cockatoos are all but demure

Noble macaws are only 12 to 14 inches long.

Hyacinth macaws are up to 44 inches long – 4 times the size of a noble macaw.

You can’t compare the two just because the are macaws.

A patient of mine highly recommended you.

I’ve watched some of the biting videos but you see I took in a rescue sunconure.

We believe it’s male.

It humps everything right now.

His wings are not clipped mind you and I’m not against doing it if it will help.

My issue is not only is he hand shy but also a biter really bad.

We believe he is 4-5yo.

Where should I start and how?

Yay!! I can’t wait to read the article. By the way, do you or anyone you know have experience with Galahs (aka Rose-breasted cockatoos)?

I have one that I got as a baby (It was about 6-9 months old). She is just under 2 years old now. I wasn’t impressed when I drove out of state to buy her from the breeder that came with great recommendations.
